Best videos of 2012: Gravity-defying roof illusion

Joanna Carver, reporter

A head-scratching illusion comes in at number 10 in our best videos of 2012 countdown.

Try to wrap your head around this illusion featuring a roof that appears to defy gravity by attracting balls to its peak. Once the house is rotated to uncover the secret, you'll be surprised to see how dramatically your brain was tricked.

According to Kokichi Sugihara from Meiji University in Kawasaki, Japan, who created the mind-bending house, the illusion is interesting because our brain is fooled even after we've seen the reveal. When trying to make sense of a figure, we're primed to perceive rectangular configurations time and time again.

To find out more, read our original article: "Friday Illusion: Impossible roof defies gravity". For more mind-boggling videos, check out an impossible wedding car or watch a 3D shape that conceals six different tricks.

While bloggers in general are focused on sharing information with the goal of becoming a recognized ?thought leader? business blogs share information with the intent of attracting attention and generating sales.

As a business blogger you are NOT required to pump out 15 posts ?per day? let alone per week. If you can blog often great, but just know that if you can only consistently post a few times per month that is fine too. I always tell people:

?I am not really a blogger. I am an entrepreneur who just happens to like blogging to attract business.?

As a business owner, your primary task is to take care of your business, so you never want to feel like blogging is a time-consuming activity that takes you away from other things you need to do. Know that you can keep it simple and if your nervous, trust me, it get?s easier with practice! Now let?s get into the video below?

But, many people aren?t included in word wide web projects incredibly commonly and are not guaranteed what to try to find when choosing the very best web layout agency. Deciding upon the incorrect web site model workforce could verify devastating, and that means you ought to be cautious.

Below are 5 things take into consideration when picking an online style supplier:

Is their world wide web design and style pricing very extremely good to become right? Inside of the world of net model, affordable equates to weak outstanding. Quality-cutting measures include things like:
Outsourcing give good results
Re-packaging styles (which have been usually rejected by other buyers), or
Neglecting good assurance and testing A new everyday tactic is to try to present a low original quote when hiding expenditures that should inevitably pile up over the scope of the task. You can expect to also wish to be careful which the corporation might have small practical experience, or that it could not be in opportunity tomorrow. We frequently have clientele come to us to rescue their web site following possessing labored by having a ?discount? word wide web style and design business, ensuing in lost time and wasted income. Don?t permit that be you.

Saving a bit of up front could set you back far more from the long term.

Are they a vendor or even a lover? The net design and style company?s solution to their loving relationship along with you is extremely immensely important. Vendors reflect on success by their very own eyes, and also you and your online business ambitions are of no issue to them. When your challenge concludes, they go away, without having vested desire in your results. Associates, in contrast, try to get mutual achievement over the long run. It is actually a victory for them at the time you succeed. Right being successful is measured not by just launching a blog, but by that webpage getting return on investment decision and expanding your enterprise.

Question no matter whether the company has just like a whole lot expertise in branding, promotion, and print pattern as they do with word wide web.

Determine a full-service organization to create not just an impressive website, but a comprehensive promotional technique.

Will their CMS contribute to you anxiety?Presume of a Subject material Administration Structure (CMS) as ?the wheel.? Some web pattern companies you could try to reinvent the wheel on each and every venture, developing proprietary customized choices that will be rarely essential and include sizeable prices for your venture. Employing a proprietary solution could also lock you in to working with that service for all of your word wide web repair or internet page upgrades inside of the upcoming.Other services (this type of as Intuit or Volusion) cause you to rent their wheel, actually leasing a web site from their platform by having a ?software as the service? CMS. These alternatives are really modest in layout and performance (with basically no power to customize possibly), therefore you won?t be in a position to acquire any belonging to the page along with you in case you depart. And after that you?ll find even now some internet style and design organizations who will have a shot at to encourage you that you just do not need a wheel, applying their web sites in outdated know-how these kinds of as Dreamweaver templates (or some times static HTML) so that you?re pressured to count on the company to make even minimal updates (regularly underneath an overpriced upkeep arrangement). Locate an online structure firm who:

Considers websites without a CMS to become just plain nutty
Builds online pages on an wide open resource Subject material Management Solution platform (this kind of as WordPress or Drupal)
Listens to, documents, and implements your distinctive prerequisites
Happily claims, ?You individual the code? Your website ought to be developed on a scalable, customizable, open-source platform making sure that it delivers lasting worth and grows with your organisation.

Consider your time and efforts and look into many web site style service providers before you generate a dedication. This really is a significant expense, plus a very important portion of your respective opportunity, so guantee that you might be making the appropriate resolution.

(AP) ? Kerwynn Williams ran for 235 yards and three touchdowns and No. 18 Utah State won a bowl game for the first time in nearly 20 years, beating Toledo 41-15 on Saturday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The victory capped the best season in Utah State history. The Aggies finished 11-2, won the Western Athletic Conference title outright and had their first bowl victory since 1993.

Chuckie Keeton scored on a 62-yard run to put Utah State up 7-3, and Williams, the game's MVP, sparked a 28-point fourth quarter for Utah State when he broke through the defense and raced 63 yards for a touchdown to put the Aggies up 20-9. Williams, who had 18 carries, followed that with TD runs of 5 and 25 yards. Keeton ran for 92 yards and was 21-of-31 passing for 229 yards.

Toledo (9-4) was able to move the ball and made five trips inside the red zone. But penalties and miscues forced the Rockets to settle for Jeremiah Detmer's three field goals.

The Rockets' only touchdown came when Bernard Reedy returned a fourth-quarter kickoff 87 yards. Reedy was the only big producer on a Toledo offense held to 315 total yards. Reedy had 51 yards rushing and caught six passes for 62 yards.

Toledo quarterback Austin Dantin, who started in place of the injured Terrence Owens, was 12 of 21 passing for 132 yards. Dantin threw an interception in the third quarter to end a promising scoring drive and was replaced by Owens in the fourth quarter.

Owens moved the Rockets on his first possession, but another red-zone opportunity was squelched when the Aggies snuffed Owens for no gain on a fourth-and-1 play from the 9.

Toledo played without two top players. Linebacker Dan Molls, the nation's leading tackler, had a concussion on the opening kickoff and didn't return. Minutes later, running back David Fluellen, the nation's eighth-leading rusher, went down with an ankle injury.

The Aggies pulled away in the fourth quarter when Williams, held in check much of the game, broke off several long runs. After his 63-yard TD run, Williams broke through the line on the next Utah State possession, dashing 56 yards before being tackled at the 5. He scored one play later, then scored his final touchdown 1:30 later.

Utah State rolled up 582 yards on offense, including 353 yards on the ground.

Flower Industry Makes a Statement at Hospice's 12th Annual Floral ...

?

Death is a part ? albeit?painful part ? of living. The type of issue that comes along once in a while from a distance to remind us of it?s inevitability and occasionally close enough to shake us to the core. In cases of long term illness there is some time to prepare, to care for and attend to situational matters and possibly come to grips with some level of acceptance. But, What do you say to 6 year old daughter when she asks where her Grandma has gone? How as a parent do you attempt to fill the space that was once a loving hug? How do you move past your grief long enough to deal with funeral arrangements??What do you do when?aftermath?an expected?loss hits so hard that you can barely stand? Just remember you are not alone.

Hospice, Inc. with 69 offices in NY State and over 5,000 offices nationally, is the leading bereavement support services provider bringing quality care and compassionate healing to families since 1974. Some history?:

The organization was spun in the mid seventies after Dr. Elizabth Kubler-Ross published her book On Death and Dying identifying the 5 stages terminally ill patients go through. It was a national best seller that opened the medical industries eyes to home-care services. She then testified at the first national hearings conducted by the U.S. Senate Special Committee on aging on the subject of ?dying with dignity? siting,?We can give families more help with home care and visiting nurses, giving the families and the patients the spiritual, emotional, and financial help in order to facilitate the final care at home.? The first Hospice was founded in 1974? in Connecticut. Legislation that provided federal funds followed in 1974.

Hudson Valley has two Hospice offices (one in Poughkeepsie and one in Kingston). Patient care, family care, bereavement counseling and family support services are all provided through Hospice and their many volunteers. Currently there are 157 local volunteers providing outreach for Mid-Hudson Hospice. Michelle Haynes ? a Dutchess county resident ? is a lovely woman with a comforting smile. She has trained once a year since 1992? in order to serve the community through Hospice support services. Michelle arrives to comfort people in their time of loss, holds hands and shares stories ? often remaining friends with the families for years to come.

On a local level Mid-Hudson Hospice has been uniting with local florists for 12 years ? throwing a beautiful soiree that benefits the organization and it?s very important work.?Poughkeepsie Grandview was home to the event?in 2012 uniting? 9 local?florists with?a?room packed full of?flower lovers and Hospice supporters ? ?checkbooks in hand ? ready to bid on?a?cornucopia of beautiful?arrangements donated by local florists.

?Floral Magic??event ? as it?s recognized?was hosted by?Dot Chenevert ? former owner of The Green Oak Florist and past president of the Mid-Hudson Floral Association. Dot ? who has since sold her flower business ? shared a message about the local florist industry that comes in handy during this holiday season and all year round,??We are a very generous and giving industry made up of mostly small family shops. We depend on our community for support??. In other words, buy local.

Poughkeepsie?s own Flower Barn florist (located on Violet Ave.) hears this message loud and clear. Barbara is a 3rd generation florist who shares her market with some national names in flowers who she creates and delivers for, but the relationship does under cut her bottom line.??A large variety of arrangements are available through most local shop websites and calling shops directly keeps all of the dollars local.? Use these services and keep those dollars local!

Petersen Automotive Museum Opens Vault to Public for the First Time

Just the Facts:
  • The Petersen Automotive Museum, for the first time in its history, is allowing the public to tour its famous vault, which houses more than half of the museum's collection.
  • Tucked into the vault are such vehicles as a rare Jaguar XKSS formerly owned by Steve McQueen and a Volkswagen Beetle driven by Lindsay Lohan.
  • Guided tours will run through January 6, after which the vault will once again remain accessible only to museum staff and special guests.

LOS ANGELES ? The Petersen Automotive Museum, for the first time in its history, is allowing the public to tour its famous vault, which houses more than half of the museum's collection.

Tucked into the vault are such vehicles as a rare Jaguar XKSS formerly owned by Steve McQueen and a Volkswagen Beetle driven by Lindsay Lohan in Herbie Fully Loaded.

Other noteworthy vehicles include a one-of-a-kind 1925 "Round Door" Rolls-Royce Phantom, a 1939 Bugatti given to the Shah of Iran as a wedding present and a Ferrari given to Henry Ford II by Enzo Ferrari.

Guided tours will run only through January 6, after which the vault will once again remain accessible only to museum staff and special guests.

The main floors of the museum are able to hold only about 150 vehicles at any given time, but the entire collection comprises more than twice that number, with most of them stored underground in the vault, which runs the entire length of the 300,000-square-foot building.

The vault has become legendary among regular museum-goers, who have often asked for tours, but until now it has been strictly off-limits, except to employees and special guests.

The Petersen Automotive Museum, one of the largest in the world, was founded by publishing giant Robert E. Petersen, whose stable of 36 monthly magazines included Hot Rod, Motor Trend, Rod & Custom, and Car Craft.

Petersen, a Los Angeles native, returned home from service in the Army Air Corps in World War II and quickly became swept up in the burgeoning California car culture. He published the first issue of Hot Rod in January 1948, and rode his motorcycle to racetracks and retail outlets around the state, selling the magazine for 25 cents.

Other publications followed, and as his empire grew, so did his collection of vehicles and automotive memorabilia. In June of 1994, he and his wife, Margie, along with a group of supportive friends, opened the museum to house both Petersen's private collection and vehicles on loan from various institutions and individuals.

The treasures include a collection of vintage Southern California hot rods, a Popemobile, a Hot Wheels toy display and Elvis Presley's 1971 De Tomaso Pantera.

The vault will open for tours on December 15. An additional ticket purchase of $25 is required and includes access to the vault.

Edmunds says: The only downside is that photography is not permitted.

These 1938 psychological researchers studied college students by hiding under their beds

These 1938 psychological researchers studied college students by hiding under their bedsNowadays, if you want to conduct ethically dubious on how college students speak to one another, you have all sorts of technologically advanced options: bugs, nanny cams, recording applications installed on cell phones. But in 1938, when a team of psychological researchers wanted to study the speech habits of students, they had to resort to personally spying on their subjects, sometimes even hiding under their beds.

Mind Hacks points us to this odd study, <em>"Egocentricity" in Adult Conversation, authored by Bryn Mawr department of psychology researchers Mary Henlea and Marian B. Hubbella, and published in a 1938 issue of the Journal of Social Psychology. The study was conducted in response to research that claimed that children engage in self-centered speech only to grow out of it as they get older. Henlea and Hubbella's research showed that college students continued to engage in this egocentric speech, but their methods of studying candid, unselfconscious speech were a little unorthodox:

In order not to introduce artifacts into the conversations, the investigators took special precautions to keep the subjects ignorant of the fact that their remarks were being recorded. To this end they concealed themselves under beds in students' rooms where tea parties were being held, eavesdropped in dormitory smoking-rooms and dormitory wash-rooms, and listened to telephone conversations.

It sounds like, for the most part, the researchers were studying peers who wouldn't realize they were being studied. But I imagine the tea partying ladies of Bryn Mawr would have been less than thrilled to discover someone hiding under their beds and recording their conversations. One of the commenters at Mind Hacks linked to this Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal comic, which reminds us that shouts of "I'm a scientist!" don't negate awkward situations and can, in fact, taint your results.

Great Internet Promotion Pointers To Help You Beat The - Businesses

Some startups evolve into financial powerhouses, while others remain small operations for their entire tenure. Some will just fail all together. New enterprises are known for an astonishing failure ratio, which is particularly the case when it comes to online entities. The following article will give you some helpful marketing tips, so that you can avoid the pitfalls of starting a business on the Internet.

The address of your company?s website should be something that?s easy for people to remember. When it is possible, your company?s name is the best URL. Keep your website address simple so that searchers can easily remember how to get to your site.

Getting backlinks (links from other sites to yours) is an important part of Web marketing. You should make it easy for other webmasters to do this by putting a prominent ?Link to Us? option on your site. Let people know you would appreciate it if they shared a link to your content on their site or if they shared your content on social networks.

TIP! Try to make sure that your site is filled with the info that your customers are looking for. Don?t make the mistake of assuming a one-page website with very little information will engage and keep a customer?s attention.

Change your headlines often and see how it affects traffic. When you?ve found what works best, be consistent in approach. Also, make sure that you listen to your customer?s reviews and opinions.

Giving visitors a free course is a smart way to attract them. This Internet promotion strategy allows you to package your free course with related products that people will buy. You can use your ad campaign to detail your customers about the contest.

TIP! Offering several different payment options for customers will lead to more sales. You need to give people the option of using PayPal or debit from their bank accounts instead of only offering credit card payments.

Try putting a blog on your site and updating it regularly. Blogging regularly gives you an excellent avenue from which to communicate directly with your customers. Additionally, a blog increases the size of your website, which causes your search engine visibility to increase, which gives you more visitors in this long run.

Try to make a subtle, non-flashy website. When someone visits your site, you have only a few seconds to intrigue them and get them to stay. If you can?t accomplish this, chances are they?ll leave your website to find a better one.

The only positive way to look at this high rate of failure in Internet businesses is that it leaves a spot open for you to fill. If you use these suggestions here in this article you can be successful.

TIP! Figuring out your niche for your business is key to market on the Internet. For instance, if you?re trying to sell electronics, the Amish crowd isn?t going to be your primary target.

Barroso says Italy vote must not stop reform drive

ROME (Reuters) - Early elections in Italy must not hinder the economic reforms of Prime Minister Mario Monti, the head of the European Commission was quoted as saying on Sunday, in a sign of growing international concern over the political crisis in Rome.

Monti's surprise announcement on Saturday that he intended to resign early once next year's budget is approved has opened the prospect of an election in February, a few weeks before the natural end of his term in April.

Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, whose withdrawal of support for the technocrat government in parliament last week triggered the crisis, has already announced he will be running on a platform attacking Monti's economic policies.

Speaking to business daily Il Sole 24 Ore, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said Italy, the euro zone's third largest economy, remained at risk of a renewed bout of financial crisis, despite months of improving market confidence.

"The next elections must not serve as a pretext for putting in doubt how indispensable these measures are," he said.

"The relative calm on the markets does not mean we are out of the crisis," he said.

Barroso's comments underlined the uncertainty created by the sudden acceleration of Italy's political crisis following Berlusconi's decision to turn his back on Monti, whose government his People of Freedom (PDL) party had backed in parliament for more than a year.

According to the daily Corriere della Sera, Monti himself said he had been besieged with questions on the crisis while attending a conference in Cannes in the south of France on Saturday.

"I did not reply all day to the many questions which I received, especially from foreigners. I noticed their amazement about the Italian situation," he was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Italian 10 year bond yields, the main barometer of market opinion, rose last week as the crisis broke, reversing weeks of steady falls although they remain well short of the levels reached during last year's crisis.

The yield on the 10 year BTP stood at 4.5 percent at the end of last week, 323 basis points higher than the yield on lower risk German 10 year Bunds but much lower than the level of 7.3 percent seen last year.

passtoolsA little over a year after Urban Airship's acquisition of location startup SimpleGeo, the company has moved to once again expand its feature set by acquiring venture-backed Tello in an all-stock deal. The startup,?which?debuted at TechCrunch Disrupt in 2010, had initially been focused on building real time feedback tools for business customers, but had more recently refocused its efforts on PassTools, a visual pass builder for Apple's Passbook. Scuba Diving: Scuba Diving Safety - A Guide on Safe Scuba Practices

Scuba diving can be one of the most enjoyable recreational sports you will ever make. However, before you start getting all excited about scuba, you have to be very well aware that scuba diving does carry its own risks.

Diving related accidents resulting in death or serious injuries are not all that rare. You may hear every now and again of such unfortunate incidents in which a diver looses his life. It makes you want to stop and think.

However, this should not stop you from a giving it a try. With proper care and caution, scuba diving can be a very relaxing sport. There are kids and elderly alike that enjoy this pastime without loosing their lives.

Let me put this into context. Scuba is no more dangerous than riding a motorcycle. In fact I dare to say that today, it is more dangerous riding a motorcycle in a quiet street. But that does not stop bikers from getting on the road and enjoying their machine.

Firstly let us take a look as to why most scuba diving accidents occur. Well, according to statistics, most scuba diving deaths occur to divers who are not properly trained. Either due to not knowing how to operate their scuba equipment or because of a lack of understanding on the effects of diving in deep water.?

The first step you should need to do even before buying your own equipment is to get certified with a reputable certifying agency. Do not opt to get trained by a friend or a relative who is not a a certified scuba instructor. Instructors are highly qualified in specialized training and skill and will provide you with the necessary scuba skills which you will not get through an unqualified person.

Physical health is another important factor. Scuba is a very strenuous sport. Scuba fatalities from heart or circulatory problems account for about a quarter of all scuba diving deaths. Although you do not need to be a world class athlete, You should be healthy enough to take on the physical stresses associated to scuba diving. If you are in doubt of your physical capabilities, it would be wise to undertake a physical exam before a dive.

One of the most crucial scuba diving safety rules is - never dive on your own. No matter what level of expertise you have, you should always dive with a buddy. Help given underwater even in the simplest form can make all the different between life or death. Besides it is more enjoyable to have someone to share your diving experience with rather than diving on your own.

Always go down with someone who has far more experience than you. This is especially the case if you are a beginner to scuba diving. Two or more beginner scuba divers going on their own is an ingredient for disaster. Get the necessary skills by learning from other who are more proficient. Notice the way they fin underwater, how far more relaxed and delicate their movements seem to be. Become an active diver. If you were to dive frequently, you will maintain your proficiency and will gradually build up your experiences and capabilities.

Many divers risk their lives by overlooking certain risks. Over-confident divers may stray away from their dive plan to explore an underwater cave. This risk can easily be avoided if the dive plan is maintained. Never stray away from the dive plan.?

Remember that you are a guest in the underwater environment which is alien to the world you are normally accustomed to... There are many factors that can lead to dangerous situations. Therefore you have to always be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to react when caught up in a dangerous situation.

A key in scuba diving safety is to continue your diving eduction. A good diver will never stop learning. There are so many things to learn about which will give you the necessary confidence in scuba diving. It is therefore essential that you maintain your scuba skills by diving frequently.

The most important factor when it comes to scuba diving safety is that you take proper care of the equipment which is taking care of you when you are underwater. Service your scuba equipment at least annually and maintain your gear in good condition. If you own scuba tanks then it is best to pressure tested them every 5 years.?

Egypt's top court suspends work in protest

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's top court suspended its work indefinitely to protest "psychological and physical pressures" after supporters of the Islamist president prevented judges from entering the courthouse Sunday to rule on the legitimacy of a disputed constitutional assembly.

The decision by the Supreme Constitutional Court is the latest twist in a worsening political crisis pitting President Mohammed Morsi and his allies against the mostly secular opposition and the powerful judiciary. The standoff began when Morsi issued decrees on Nov. 22 that gave him sweeping powers and granted the president ? and the constitutional committee ? immunity from the courts.

The Islamist-dominated panel drafting the new constitution then raced in a marathon session last week to vote on the charter's 236 clauses without the participation of liberal and Christian members. The fast-track hearing preempted a decision expected from the SCC on whether to dissolve the committee. The judges on Sunday postponed their ruling on that case.

A day earlier, Morsi announced a referendum on the draft charter on Dec. 15 despite opposition protests and questions about the document's legitimacy.

The president's seizure of vast powers has galvanized Egypt's disparate opposition groups, who have united in their demands that Morsi rescind the decrees and create a constituent assembly that is more balanced and inclusive.

Having already held mass rallies last week in Cairo that drew as many as 200,000 people, the opposition parties and activist groups have now called for a march Tuesday on the presidential palace in Cairo's Heliopolis district as a "last warning."

Morsi's supporters countered the opposition rallies with a 100,000-strong rally in Cairo on Saturday to voice their support for the president and the draft constitution. Islamists boasted their turnout showed that the public supports the push by the country's first freely elected president to quickly bring a constitution and provide stability after nearly two years of turmoil.

But the dispute has polarized an already deeply divided Egyptian public, and thrown the country ? already suffering from rising crime and economic woes ? into its worst turmoil since Morsi took office in June as the country's first freely elected president.

The Supreme Constitutional Court called Sunday "the Egyptian judiciary's blackest day on record," describing the scene outside the court complex, with Islamist demonstrators carrying banners denouncing the tribunal and some of its judges.

Supporters of Morsi, who hails from the Islamic fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, claim that the court's judges are loyalists of ousted president Hosni Mubarak, who appointed them. Morsi's backers accuse the judges of trying to derail Egypt's transition to democratic rule.

The court statement said the judges approached the court but decided against entering the building because they feared for their safety.

"The judges of the Supreme Constitutional Court were left with no choice but to announce to the glorious people of Egypt that they cannot carry out their sacred mission in this charged atmosphere," said the statement, which was carried by the MENA state news agency.

The judges also had been expected Sunday to rule to on the legitimacy of the Islamist-dominated upper house of parliament, known as the Shura Council.

By suspending its work, the court joined the country's highest appeals court and its sister lower court in their indefinite strike to protest what they see as Morsi's infringement on the judiciary. Most judges and prosecutors in the country have been on strike for a week.

The strikes by the judges is indefinite and there have been calls within their ranks to extend their action to a boycott of overseeing the Dec. 15 referendum, something that would further question the legitimacy of the entire process. The opposition is likely to call on its supporters to boycott the vote.

The tug of war between the two sides also has spilled into the streets. Tens of thousands of opposition supporters staged two rallies last week to press calls for Morsi to rescind his decrees and for the constitution draft to be tossed out. Islamists responded Saturday with large rallies in Cairo and across much of the country.

Morsi's opponents say his call for a referendum broke an election promise not to do so unless there was consensus on the document, something that is missing as the 88 members of the panel who voted on its clauses included no liberals or Christians. There were only four women, all Islamists.

The panel passed the document in a rushed, 16-hour session that lasted until sunrise Friday. The vote was abruptly moved up to pass the draft before the Constitutional Court's ruling, which was supposed to be issued Sunday.

The draft has a distinctive Islamic bent ? enough to worry many that civil liberties could be restricted, though its provisions for enforcing Shariah, or Islamic law, are not as firm as ultraconservatives wished.

The panel's chairman, Islamist Hossam al-Ghiryani, kept the voting at a rapid clip, badgering members to drop disputes and objections and move on. At times the process appeared slap-dash, with fixes to missing phrasing and even several entirely new articles proposed, written and voted on in the hours just before sunrise.

Rep. Tom Cole: Republicans Don't Need to Present a Plan Yet

Republicans don't need to counter President Obama's proposal to avert the fiscal cliff with a formal plan of their own, according to Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., the deputy majority whip in the House of Representatives.

"I don't think we need to put a formal proposal out on the table," Cole said on the "This Week" roundtable Sunday. "The Speaker has already said that revenue is on the table. We have an idea of how to get there in terms of not raising rates but finding another way through the tax code and reform."

"Beyond that we'll see how negotiations go," added Cole, who broke ranks with his party last week by calling for immediately extending middle class tax cuts scheduled to expire at the end of the year.

(More from Sunday's show HERE)

Former Romney campaign senior adviser Dan Senor disagreed with Cole, saying that Republicans do need to present a formal proposal on avoiding the fiscal cliff.

"I do think Republican leadership at some point here needs to put forth publicly its plan," Senor said.

Cole called the White House proposal, which was presented by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner to Congressional leaders last week, more of a "Christmas wish list" than a serious plan.

(Read a transcript of George's interview with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner HERE.)

"I'd like to thank the President and Tim Geithner for reuniting and re-energizing the Republican Caucus," Cole said. "That offer, they must think John Boehner is Santa Claus because that's a Christmas wish list not a real proposal."

The proposal, which reportedly included $1.6 trillion in tax revenue, entitlement savings to be worked out next year, an end to debt ceiling votes, and stimulus spending, was soundly rejected by Republican legislators.

Geithner said earlier on 'This Week' that the ball is in now the court of Congressional Republicans.

Cole reiterated his willingness to work with Democrats on that issue - at least initially - in an effort to "strengthen" the Republicans' negotiating position on the remaining tax cuts.

"I actually do believe that we should take things where we do agree with the president, and we do agree on this, and take things off the table one at a time. And this would, actually I think, strengthen our position in the course of negotiations," Cole said.

Extending tax cuts for 98 percent of Americans is a "victory not a loss," he added later.

Senor said that Republicans don't want to see the country go over the fiscal cliff, but President Obama's proposal may only serve to "poison the environment" in his second term, not lead the way to a deal on the fiscal cliff.

"I do think the President has gone way too far out to the left," Senor said.

Train kills four at U.S. parade for troops

By Greg Botelho and Joe Sutton, CNN

November 16, 2012 -- Updated 1713 GMT (0113 HKT)

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: Sgt. Maj. Gary Stouffer and Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Boivin died at the scene
  • NEW: Sgt. Joshua Michael and Sgt. Maj. William Lubbers died at a hospital
  • The last truck in the parade is hit by a train, a police spokesman says

(CNN) -- A train rammed into a flatbed truck carrying participants in a West Texas parade saluting U.S. troops, killing four people and injuring several others, a police spokesman said.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, during the "Hunt for Heroes" event in Midland. According to the group Show of Support, these festivities -- including a banquet and, after that, an "all expense paid whitetail deer hunt" -- are to honor members of all branches of the U.S. military.

The last flatbed truck in the parade was crossing tracks when an eastbound train slammed into it, said Midland police spokesman Ryan Stout.

Some people were able to jump off the truck in time.

First responders found two dead at the scene, while two others were later pronounced dead at Midland Memorial Hospital, Stout said. Ten other people were treated and released at the hospital, while five remained hospitalized Thursday night, one of them in critical condition.

Army Sgt. Maj. Gary Stouffer, 37, and Army Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Boivin, 47, were pronounced dead at the scene. Army Sgt. Joshua Michael, 34, and Army Sgt. Maj. William Lubbers, 43, died at Midland Memorial Hospital.

Five others continue to be treated at University Medical Center in Lubbock. One remains in critical condition.

Parade attendee: 'I'm waving at these guys and then you ... find out this happened'

Authorities don't yet know why the truck was on the tracks as the train arrived at the crossing, Stout said.

The National Transportation Safety board will initiate an investigation Friday that will include review of video from a camera on the train.

The gates and lights at the intersection were working at the time, and the train's two-member crew sounded the horn prior to impact, according to Tom Lange, a spokesman for Union Pacific Railroad. The train included more than 80 rail cars carrying double-stacked containers, he said.

The NTSB said it has not confirmed whether the crossing gates and signals were active at the time of the accident.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with family and friends of those affected," Lange said, adding that Union Pacific employees are on site and more are heading that way to investigate.

Lange said the train itself is operational and its crew was not injured. They are being offered counseling, he said.

This is just the ?beginning?: Israel ready to expand attacks after assassinating Hamas head

Israel carried out a blistering offensive of more than 20 air strikes in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, assassinating Hamas? military commander Ahmed Jabari and targeting the armed group?s training facilities and rocket launchers in Israel?s most intense attack on the territory in nearly four years.

?We must be clear that Israel will not tolerate a situation in which there is incessant [rocket] fire on our citizens. No life-loving country would accept this situation,? Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak said at a news conference Wednesday. ??We are still at the beginning of the event, not at the end, and we expect some complicated tests ahead.?

The onslaught shattered hopes that a truce mediated on Tuesday by Egypt could pull the two sides back from the brink of war after five days of escalating Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli strikes at militant targets.

Israel said the airstrikes, launched in response to days of rocket fire out of Hamas-ruled Gaza, were the beginning of a broader operation against the Islamic militants codenamed ?Pillar of Defence.? Israeli defence officials said a ground operation was a strong possibility in the coming days though they stressed no decisions had been made and much would depend on Hamas? reaction. There were no immediate signs of extraordinary troop deployments along the border.

?Today we relayed a clear message to the Hamas organization and other terrorist organizations,? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. ?And if there is a need, the [Israel Defence Forces] are prepared to broaden the operation. We will continue to do everything in order to protect our citizens.?

Meanwhile, Hamas immediately called for revenge were broadcast over radio after Al-Jabari?s death.

?The occupation has opened the gates of hell,? Hamas?s armed wing said. Smaller groups also vowed to strike back.

?Israel has declared war on Gaza and they will bear the responsibility for the consequences,? Islamic Jihad said.

Southern Israeli communities within rocket range of Gaza were on full alert, and schools were ordered closed for Thursday. About one million Israelis live in range of Gaza?s relatively primitive but lethal rockets, supplemented in recent months by longer-range, more accurate systems.

?The days we face in the south will, in my estimation, prove protracted,? Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai, Israel?s chief military spokesman, told Channel 2 TV.

The Obama administration responded to the flareup by strongly condemning Hamas, an Islamist group shunned by the West as an obstacle to peace.

?There is no justification for the violence that Hamas and other terrorist organizations are employing against the people of Israel,? said Mark Toner, deputy U.S. State Department spokesman.

?We call on those responsible to stop these cowardly acts immediately. We support Israel?s right to defend itself, and we encourage Israel to continue to take every effort to avoid civilian casualties.?

Jabari, the shadowy Hamas military chief killed in the initial missile strike, had long topped the Jewish state?s most-wanted list for masterminding a string of deadly attacks.

One was the 2006 capture of an Israeli soldier in a complex cross-border raid that killed two other soldiers.

Jabari, a former history student who spent 13 years in Israeli prisons, also commanded Hamas fighters during a 2007 takeover of Gaza in which they drove out forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

During nine years as leader of the Hamas Izzedine al Qassam Brigades, Jabari largely stayed out of the public eye. His highest profile appearance came in October 2011, when he escorted the captured Israeli soldier, Sgt. Gilad Schalit, out of Gaza in a swap for about 1,000 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

Jabari was born in 1960 in Gaza City. He began as a member of Abbas? Fatah movement, but switched his allegiance to Hamas during his time in Israeli prisons.

Jonathan Kay: In Gaza, Hamas military leader Ahmed Jaabari got what he deserved

In general terms, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict requires a political solution: If it were merely a matter of military might, Israel could have declared victory decades ago. A two-state solution ? which Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas both nominally seek ? will require deals to be struck on borders, the status of Jerusalem, water rights and refugees.

After Israel released him in 1995, he worked for a Hamas-run support group for prisoners. In 1998, he was jailed by Palestinian security forces in Gaza for his involvement with the Hamas military wing. Jabari was released two years later, after Israel shelled Gaza prisons as part of its crackdown on a Palestinian uprising.

In 2003, Jabari became the de facto commander of the Hamas military wing after then-chief Mohammed Deif was seriously wounded in an Israeli attack. Jabari survived four attempts by Israel to kill him. In 2004, an air strike on Jabari?s house killed his son, Mohammed, a brother and three other relatives.

Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005 but still controls its airspace, seacoast and all but one of its land crossings.

Hamas has ruled Gaza with an iron hand since the 2007 takeover, deepening the political split with Abbas. Repeated attempts at reconciliation have failed.

The takeover deepened the isolation of Hamas and prompted the group to rely increasingly on Iran and Syria. Jabari was instrumental in developing the Hamas military arsenal and the group?s networks in Iran, Sudan and Lebanon.

The Hamas founding charter calls for the destruction of Israel, though the group has been grappling with its political direction in recent years.

Founded in Gaza in 1987, Hamas carried out scores of suicide bombings in Israel, killing hundreds of Israelis, but halted most such attacks several years ago. Gaza militants, including those from Hamas, have fired thousands of mortars and rockets at Israel in the past decade, drawing Israeli retaliation.

Jabari was considered close to Hamas hard-liner Mahmoud Zahar, a Gaza strongman. In 2011, Jabari wrote in a Hamas publication that ?as long as the Jews occupy our land, they have one thing (in store), death, or they leave the occupied Palestinian territories.?

High Schools Teaching The War On Terror: The Atlantic Looks At A History Textbook

What kids learn in school tends to change with the times, and some curricular regulations that are either antiquated or simply embedded in beliefs have raised eyebrows across the country as of late.

Yet regulation aside, in a layer of education that reaches students firsthand, is the textbook: the student's omniscient manual in any given subject. Because these books dictate student knowledge and can shape perspective, their contents are sometimes the source of controversy. In Louisiana, for example, one commonly used textbook teaches students "the accumulated wisdom of the past from a biblical worldview."

And while September 11 is a recent memory that many still live with, the attacks are a distant reference to schoolchildren today. As the event and its subsequent war have become "recent history," The Atlantic's Conor Friedersdorf took to examine how high schoolers are learning about 9/11 and the years following.

His general findings: the threat of terrorism can be eliminated, the Patriot Act was not controversial and Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

Friedersdorf's analysis is decidedly unscientific, looking only at one history textbook: a 2003 edition of The American Vision by Professors Joyce Appleby, Alan Brinkley, Albert Broussard, James McPhereson, and Donald Ritchie. Still, the book is one of the most used American history textbooks in schools for 11th graders.

He criticizes the book's flat portrayal of 9/11, perhaps misleading students to believe that the day's attacks killed more people than the invasion of Normandy. The authors, he points out, also use examples of "terrorist attacks" on America that don't fit the book's own definition of terrorism. Friedersdorf writes:

What follows is an account of the early War on Terrorism told from the perspective of the Bush Administration, often using paraphrased or direct quotes from government officials rather than exercising judgment. "President Bush decided the time had come to end the threat of terrorism in the world," the authors say, as if discussing a plausible proposal that might well end up succeeding.

Isn't that the sort of myopia historical study is supposed to gird us against?

To be sure, Friedersdorf points to the book's 2003 publish year as indication that its contents were written during a volatile time in America -- when tensions ran high and when public sentiment was patriotic. But that's not a factor in how students are learning about the country's recent history.

Click through to continue reading excerpts from the textbook and Friedersdorf's analysis of the chapter's teachings of the Patriot Act, acts of terrorism against America, anthrax and the Bush administration's response and decisions leading up to the Afghanistan War.

Friedersdorf's criticisms of the history textbook come as American students are continuously proving to know less in subjects like history. A study released last month by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni and GfK roper saw abysmal results on surveys gauging American history literacy among college graduates. The results seemingly echoed the findings of two viral videos from earlier this year that suggested students do not possess adequate knowledge of U.S. history, politics and current events.

A 2010 study by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) showed the U.S. history testing scores are "stagnant," with only 9 percent of fourth graders correctly identifying a photograph of Abraham Lincoln and stating two reasons for his importance.

Lee White, executive director of the National History Coalition, says the problem stems from history's place in American curriculum.

"They've narrowed the curriculum to teach to the test. History has been deemphasized," he said. "You can't expect kids to have great scores in history when they're not being taught history."
