Military vet taken in NBA Draft

Bernard James wasn't the first pick of Thursday night's NBA Draft in New Jersey. James didn't even go in the first round. But the Florida State power forward stole the show when his name was called with the 33rd overall pick.
?
James, who will head to the Dallas Mavericks as part of a draft night trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, wasn't expecting to be a lottery pick but he attended the event at the Prudential Center anyway.
?
Following his name being called by NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver, the crowd started chanting U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
?
James, 27, served in the United States Air Force for six years before attending FSU. The crowd was simply showing their appreciation for his service. James nodded and thanked the crowd as he made his way to the stage.
?
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban then tweeted: "I love that kid !! USA !!"
?
James also delivered an impressive interview answer when he was asked about teams being concerned about drafting a 27-year-old rookie.
?
"I've been playing a lot less years than most of the guys in the draft, so my body is still fresh, my knees are good, everything," he responded. "And the fact that I'm 27, I've had a career before, I know what it is to be a professional. I'm going to come to work every day and make the best of this opportunity."
?
James [6-10, 230 pounds] played two years at Florida State, averaging 10.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks last season.
?
The trade included the Mavericks sending the 17th overall pick [Tyler Zeller] and Kelenna Azubuike to the Cavs in exchange for the No. 24 overall selection [Jared Cunningham] and picks 33 and 34.
?
The Mavs used No. 34 ? the fourth pick of the second round ? on Marquette small forward Jae Crowder, a 6-6, 242-pounder that averaged 17.5 points and 8.4 rebounds during his senior season.
?
Dallas drafted another Marquette player later in the second round, shooting guard Darius Johnson-Odom. But the 55th overall selection was sold to the Los Angeles Lakers, according to multiple reports.

Walter J. Zable, namesake for W&M's football stadium, dies

Credit: The College of William and Mary

Walter J. Zable (far right) poses with (from left) former President Paul Verkuil, Zable's wife, Betty, and former Rector Hays Watkins.

In 1935, the College of William and Mary played its inaugural football game at its newly dedicated Cary Field stadium, battling the University of Virginia to a 0-0 tie.

Walter Joseph Zable, who would earn a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from William and Mary in 1937, played in that game.

Mr. Zable, who turned down a scholarship from Harvard University to accept one in Williamsburg, became an honorable mention All-American in football and lettered in baseball, basketball and track. He later played for the Richmond Arrows.

William and Mary is where he met Betty Virginia Carter, a 1940 alumna he married while he was still in school.

Staunch school supporters, the Zables gave their alma mater $10 million in 1990, which prompted the board of visitors to rename the football and track and field venue Zable Stadium at Cary Field.

Williamsburg and Tribe athletics remained close to Mr. Zable's heart until he died Saturday at 97 in a San Diego hospital.

Arrangements for a memorial service are pending.

"Every college and university has a few graduates who are larger than life, whose accomplishments are simply extraordinary, and whose loyalty to their alma mater is the stuff of legend," said W. Taylor Reveley III, president of William and Mary.

"Walt Zable was such an alumnus at the College of William and Mary. He was deeply devoted to William and Mary -- one of those alumni for whom lifelong ties to his alma mater meant a lot to him.

"He was particularly generous in annual giving ? the lifeblood of the college operating budget.

"The last time I saw him at the college and had him to lunch, we drove around in a golf cart. He was extremely interested in seeing all the new construction, especially the athletic facilities."

Bobby Dwyer, senior associate athletic director for development at the school, noted that "whether it was giving for scholarships, facilities, endowments, whatever ? he was always there. And he was so generous that he inspired others to give."

At his death, Mr. Zable, who was founder and still president, CEO and chairman of Cubic Corp., was the oldest chief executive of any publicly traded company.

A Los Angeles native, he grew up in Boston, where a crystal set ignited a lifelong interest in electronics. He returned during the early 1940s to California, where he started a microwave technology business in his garage. He moved his business to Point Loma, Calif., where Cubic debuted its first profitable product in 1951 ? a device that measured the power of microwaves.

Cubic was a pioneer in postwar electronics, developing products like automatic elevators, electronic sports scoreboards and electronic voting equipment. It also had made distance-measuring devices that revolutionized offshore activities such as oil drilling and laying pipe.

The San Diego-based engineering and technology business, which employs more than 7,800 workers and posted revenue last year of $1.28 billion, now is known as a defense contractor that supplies electronic flight and ground forces training systems to militaries, produces mission-support services to the Pentagon and makes automated fare payment equipment for some of the world's largest public transit systems.

Mr. Zable's wide philanthropic interests included California colleges and his community.

He had been a director of the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame, which inducted him in 1981.

His wife died in 2007. Survivors include a son, Walter C. Zable of Del Mar, Calif.; a daughter, Karen Cox of Danville, Ky.; and five granddaughters.

Glasenberg's dealmaker renown at mercy of Qatar

LONDON (Reuters) - By rejecting Glencore's coveted acquisition of miner Xstrata, Qatar could also put paid to the reputation of Ivan Glasenberg, chief executive of the commodities trader, as consummate dealmaker.

Those who have worked with him on takeovers - and against him defending the companies he targeted - say Glasenberg's self-belief is second to none. That, plus unbending determination, means he normally gets his way.

But this time he appears to have been wrong-footed, thinking the support of major Xstrata shareholder Qatar Holdings was in the bag.

"Did Glencore misread the Qataris? Absolutely," said one banker familiar with the mining sector, but not involved in the deal. "Qatar does not like the limelight, so they must feel pretty strongly to end up going public."

Apparently undeterred by the rejection, Glasenberg showed little relish for compromise, letting it be known he would not overpay.

Glencore's position had not changed, a person familiar with the matter said, and the company would rather walk away than offer more. Bankers said such talk was a standard M&A tactic and to be expected of any company in such negotiations.

It is not only Glasenberg's track record that is under the microscope following Qatar Holdings' surprise demand for better terms for the takeover. The bankers advising him may also have been caught napping.

The stakes are high for all involved, with banking teams working on the deal standing to lose out on a pay day worth up to $130 million if the $26 billion deal collapses. Xstrata was due to pay up to $80 million to its financial advisers, while Glencore may have to shell out up to $50 million.

With fee income in retreat after a 25 percent fall in worldwide M&A volumes in the first half of the year, such pay days are more important than ever for bankers struggling to bring in revenue for their increasingly cost-conscious employers.

The combination of Glencore and Xstrata would rank as the biggest-ever done deal in a sector littered with the skeletons of failed deals. These include the $144.5 billion hostile bid for Rio Tinto by BHP Billiton in 2008, and BHP Billiton's more recent $39.7 billion offer for Canada's Potash.

Glasenberg is not the only executive to have been exposed by the failure to get "Glenstrata" blessed by shareholders.

His opposite number at Xstrata, CEO Mick Davis, was not listening to the mood music over executive pay when he secured himself a $45 million three-year retention package to seal the miner's deal with Glencore. The mining group was forced to convert it to an all-share, performance-related package after an embarrassing shareholder outcry.

Qatar Holdings, which has remained silent for months as it built up the second-largest stake in miner Xstrata - about 11 percent - pushed the deal to the brink on Tuesday, demanding better terms before it would support the deal.

The wealth fund is part of a new breed of investors in the mining sector, focused on creating long-term value and acting on motivations that are sometimes at odds with a more numerous body of investors looking at a shorter timeframe.

Despite the apparent blow to Glasenberg's plans, hedge fund managers said it was too soon to say he had been outwitted by the Qataris.

"Glasenberg is always the smartest man in the room and always one step ahead of everyone. We don't know what is going on behind closed doors," a hedge fund manager who owns Xstrata stock said.

"Hedge funds always think they are smarter than the chief executive, but not when it comes to Ivan," he added.

A second hedge fund manager said Glasenberg would do whatever was in the best interests of Glencore, whether that was to stump up more or let the deal die.

"He is one of the most capitalist individuals I have ever seen. He will change what he needs to change to get the best outcome," the second hedge fund manager said.

BANKING ON A DEAL

The deal was already proving difficult for bankers before the Qatari move. They are facing lower fees due to the unique role of former Citigroup grandee turned independent go-between Michael Klein.

It was Klein's ability to get Glasenberg and arch-rival Mick Davis to agree on a valuation that put the deal on the table. Klein is expected to earn between $10 million and $15 million for his work and could be called upon to help smooth out the latest wrinkle, sources said.

Klein's slice of the fees will mean less for Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse and BNP Paribas, Glencore's advisers.

Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Nomura and Barclays, advisers for Xstrata, will also receive a smaller proportion because of Klein's intervention.

London's "mining king", Ian Hannam, the veteran rainmaker who resigned from JP Morgan last month to fight a 450,000-pound fine imposed by British regulators for passing on inside information, is also involved in the transaction, and teams at Citigroup and Morgan Stanley include veteran UK advisers David Wormsley and Simon Robey, among the biggest names in corporate finance in the City of London.

With stakes so high, all will be banking on Glasenberg showing his usual ability for getting the deal done.

"Is he the smartest man in the room? Let's see where the deal goes," the second hedge fund manager said.

Exploring Windows 8: What We Learned at TechEd Europe

ITProPortal has just returned from Amsterdam, having attended TechEd Europe 2012 events and Microsoft's Exploring Windows 8 workshop. We are now in the process of conducting independent testing and composing reviews on selected aspects of the next generation OS, so stay tuned.

Until then, we offer you a run-down of the five things that stood out most yesterday - for more, make sure to check out our in-depth reflections on Wednesday's events.

It's Fast

Some of yesterday's demos might have seemed a bit reductionist ? I now know half a dozen optimised ways to run my finger across a touch-screen - but the one illustrating Windows 8's boot time was genuinely eye-catching. Eight seconds from cold to start screen is immensely impressive, especially considering the task was completed on a notebook device running an old generation Sandy Bridge processor. Sure, I heard "fast and fluid" uttered one too many times for my liking - but in this case it's a spot on assessment.

Lucky Charms

It might take a while for the name to catch on, but the Charm Bar nevertheless looks like a significant improvement over the traditional Start menu. Like the replacement of folders with app groups on the main UI, Microsoft's stripped down approach is beneficial from organisational and access perspectives. Crucially, Charm Bar foregrounds Device management: cross-device connectivity is one of Windows 8's main selling points and this makes it easier than ever to project media externally via an Xbox or power up a multi-monitor work station. The Share function is also attractive.

Enterprise Features Aren't Just Lip Service

Many of the important UI changes offered by Windows 8 are noticeably pitched at the consumer market, yet the refreshed software's enterprise package is also attention grabbing. Windows Store makes downloading custom-built, Metro-style business apps a mere formality, with programs for expense management and project approval among those currently knocking about on the Release Preview. But perhaps most significantly, Secure Boot?puts into place the kind of architectually neutral platform necessary to combat new generation malware, with the public key infrastructure allowing firmware images to validate prior to execution.?

This Time, It's Personal?

Responding to user feedback, Microsoft's latest OS has more scope for customisation than ever.?Some personalisation features are nice but relatively trivial, like the ability to set different wallpaper images on multi-monitor set ups. Others, by way of contrast, are hugely relevant: users can create app-based relationships linking their files to relevant services for easy sharing and uploading, meaning Word documents can be automatically associated with native cloud service SkyDrive in the workplace, and images with?Facebook at home.

Hybrids Are The Future

Not specifically Windows 8 related, but it's something I found myself thinking time and again over the last couple of days. More than that, it's a development that the latest Microsoft computing eco-system will complement beautifully.?Tablets may be predominantly entertainment and convenience-led devices at the moment - not to mention what my mum uses because she can't get her head around full-on computing - but the reality is changing fast and the new generation of slate/notebook hybrids merge consumer and enterprise worlds in an empowering manner. Just like the OS itself, come to think of it.

How to Become a Family Equipping Church | Children's Ministry ...

How to Become a Family Equipping Church Children\s Ministry YouthA Family-Equipping church begins with the mind-set that we will be intentional about making it a priority to champion the concept of parents as the primary disciple-makers in their children?s lives. ?Here are what could be considered the?Primary Principles that will Build a Strong Family Equipping Ministry:

A Strategic Question: How will this element of our ministry equip families to function as the Primary Spiritual Leaders of their Children?

Ask this question about each element of ministry. Any paradigm shift begins with an assessment of the existing model and requires an intentional change based on the desired outcome. Asking this question, every step along the way, ensures the desired objectives will remain a priority.

Parent with an Eternal Goal in Mind

Today?s culture places great pressure on parenting ?successful? children. This ?success? is typically measured by money ? getting a good job, getting in the best schools, focusing on education. Sometimes ?success? is determined by popularity ? success in sports, or beauty, or the arts. A Family Equipping Ministry will focus on equipping parents to see eternal goals as the priority in parenting. This includes accepting Christ as Savior; following Christ; Loving God; glorifying God in everything; and living out Christ?s Great Commission.

Parenting with an Intentional Plan. (Deut. 6:7)

Someone once said, ?If you fail to plan you?re planning to fail.? This is certainly true with parenting. Without a plan parents will soon find their kids grown and leaving home wondering ? what happened? We must equip parents with a biblical plan for raising their children ? how to evangelize and disciple, how to lead a family worship, how to live a life that honors God.

Intergenerational Interaction and Appreciation. (Psalm 48:13, 71:18; Titus 2)

One consequence of age segregated ministry has been the loss of intergenerational interaction. Creating intentional opportunities for all the generations to be together, to experience life together, and to interact together will significantly strengthen the faith community.

Biblical Faith is Best Taught in the Home. (Deut. 6:7, Prov. 22:6, Eph. 6)

The church is ordained by God and plays a significant role in the spiritual development of all its members. However, the first directive is to the parents for the training up of their children in the way of the Lord. We must uphold parents as the first and best disciple-makers of their own kids. We must create venues and resources to train and encourage our homes to be the place where biblical faith is taught first and best.

High Expectations for Husbands and Fathers. (Eph. 5)

We must encourage high expectations for all our parents ? however in today?s culture the biblical role given to men has largely been lost. Husbands and fathers have a unique biblical role to lead their families. The Bible clearly calls men to be the spiritual leaders in their home (Gen 3; 1 Cor 11). Men are charged with the spiritual care of their wives (Eph 5; 1 Peter 3) and the primary responsibility for training and instructing their children in the Lord (Deut 6; Eph 6). We must train men in a biblical understanding of servant leadership and equip them to be true spiritual leaders in their homes.

Passion for the Orphan and the Widow. (James 1:27)

As hard as we work to strengthen the family we must be equally diligent to build a faith community that ?adopts? those in our congregation without families, physical or spiritual. We must be intentional about providing unique opportunities for single parents and also for children who are spiritual orphans.

The scriptures are clear that the family is intended to be the primary Spiritual Influence in the life of a child.? We as churches should recognize that change is required to encourage and equip parents for their God ordained role a Spiritual Leaders.? We can successfully make this paradigm shift if we are willing to be intentional and strategic.

Is Palm Beach County Returning to a Normal Real Estate Market?

Palm Beach Housing Inventory Drops Compared to Last Year

The answer is ?it sure looks that way.?

New housing stats are up for the first time since the boom ended.

When builders start to build, they believe buyer demand will be strong once the building is complete. At the rate things are improving, that seems to be a safe bet.

Sales continue to exceed the number of new listings

This means demand is exceeding new supply. When that happens, it?s only a matter of time until prices rise.

There?s more and more hedge funds and foreign buyers taking advantage of the rare opportunity to buy Florida real estate. Why? It makes sense to buy when prices are so far below the cost to build new.

Watch this news article from our local TV station, aired this week. WPBF News reports that the inventory of homes available for sale in the Palm Beach County area is shrinking.

Palm Beach County Housing Inventory is Dropping

Compared to last year?s numbers, the inventory of town homes and condos has dropped 43% and single family homes have dropped 41%. As the available inventory shrinks, we can expect to see the pricing of single family homes increase a bit back to the level they should be at.

The fact that developers are coming to West Palm Beach for their construction projects is a good sign of things to come.

If you?ve read this far, the question I have for you is ?

Are you ready to buy?

Queen Elizabeth shakes hands with ex-IRA chief

BELFAST (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Elizabeth shook the hand of former IRA guerrilla commander Martin McGuinness for the first time on Wednesday, drawing a line under a conflict that cost the lives of thousands of soldiers and civilians, including that of her cousin.

The meeting with McGuinness, who is now the deputy first minister of Northern Ireland, comes 14 years after the Irish Republican Army ended its war against British rule in the province, and is one of the last big milestones in a peace process whose success has been studied around the world.

The queen met McGuinness, Northern Ireland's Unionist first minister Peter Robinson and Irish President Michael D.Higgins for just under 10 minutes behind closed doors in a theatre in a leafy suburb of Belfast cordoned off by hundreds of police.

McGuinness shook the hand of the queen a second time as she left the theatre, this time in front of television cameras, but unlike other guests chose not to bow his head.

The queen's bright green outfit appeared to have been chosen with Ireland's national color in mind, and McGuinness wished a smiling monarch well in Irish, saying "Slan agus beannacht", which he told her means "Goodbye and god speed".

There has been scattered opposition to the gesture of reconciliation from dissident Irish militants and from some of the IRA's victims. But the vast majority of the province's politicians backed the meeting, the first between the queen and a top member of the IRA or its former political wing, Sinn Fein.

"Today is a huge event and it is, in a sense, the ultimate handshake," John Reid, British Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 2001 to 2002, told the BBC.

"On all sorts of levels this is a hugely significant step but it is only one more step in a long process. This may take generations - to get back to absolute reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the island of Ireland."

FRIENDLY TERMS

McGuinness has long been on friendly terms with the fiery anti-Catholic Unionist leader Ian Paisley, who sat with him in a power-sharing provincial government.

The queen regularly meets senior Unionist politicians, Protestants who want Northern Ireland to stay inside the United Kingdom, but not Sinn Fein - the largest party representing Catholic nationalists who want a united Ireland.

McGuinness is a hero to Republican hardliners, but has long been a hate figure to Unionists, many of whom harbor deep suspicions about his past.

He admits he was on the front line in the war with British forces, including on Bloody Sunday in 1972, when troops shot dead 13 unarmed protesters, but says he never killed anyone.

A British report said that McGuinness probably was armed with a submachinegun on Bloody Sunday, but did nothing to provoke the massacre. He has said he left the IRA in 1974, but most historians believe he was active for most of its campaign.

For the queen and Prince Philip, who also shook McGuinness's hand, the Northern Ireland conflict had a personal edge.

The queen's cousin Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was also Philip's uncle, was killed by the IRA in 1979 with three others, including his 14-year-old grandson, when his boat was blown up while he was on holiday in Ireland.

More than 1,000 members of the British security forces were among 3,600 people killed during the 30 years of the "Troubles".

McGuinness told the queen that he agreed with comments she made last year that all victims of the conflict should be remembered, according to a source who was at the meeting.

"STILL A REPUBLICAN"

McGuinness said on Tuesday that, while he represented people who had been badly hurt by British state violence, he was also big enough to understand that the queen and other families in Britain had also lost loved ones.

Asked by reporters after the meeting if his convictions had changed, he said he was "still a Republican".

Sinn Fein, which has become increasingly popular south of the Irish border as the main party opposing an EU/IMF bailout, is keen to bolster its image as a mainstream party and distance itself from a violent past that alienates many southern voters.

It still wants a referendum on whether Northern Ireland should remain part of Britain, but in the short term its aim is to be in government north and south simultaneously.

Only last year, Sinn Fein rejected invitations to attend events during the queen's landmark visit to the Irish capital Dublin, the first by a British monarch since the republic won independence from Britain in 1921.

Some Republicans branded McGuinness a traitor for meeting a queen who is also commander-in-chief of Britain's armed forces.

"People are not unhappy that someone is shaking her hand, just not him. He's a hypocrite," said Martin, a 42-year-old unemployed man who said he and his friends had got criminal records defending their neighborhood in working-class Belfast.

"He sent people out to fight. To die. And now he's putting on a suit and shaking her hand? I don't want war (but) this shouldn't have happened till the next generation."

With splinter groups continuing to attack British targets, security forces say the risk of an attack is at its highest level since the Good Friday peace agreement was signed in 1998.

Nine police suffered minor injuries on Tuesday night when they were pelted with petrol bombs and other missiles.

The "car-sized" rover, set to touchdown on August 5th of this year at 10:31PM PDT, is currently journeying towards the Red Planet on a suicide mission of sorts, with the success of its make it or break it EDL (enter, descent, landing) wracking the nerves of our Space Agency's greatest minds in advance. Their cause for concern? A period of radio silence, dubbed the "seven minutes of terror" for the amount of time it takes a signal to reach Earth, during which the craft will have already either smashed disastrously into the Martian landscape or nestled perfectly down from the ascend phase on a 21ft long tether. The logistics involved are so numerous and prone to error -- slowing the craft from 13,000 mph to 0 mph and then deploying, detaching and avoiding collision with the supersonic parachute for starters -- that it's a wonder the government ever signed off on the project. If it all does come off without a hitch, however, the ladies and gents down at Pasadena's Jet Propulsion Laboratory certainly deserve several thousand bottles of the finest bubbly taxpayers' money can buy. Click on past the break to gape at the sequence of engineering feats required to make this landing on terra incognita.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's campaign has recruited a legion of lawyers to be on standby for this year's election as legal disputes surrounding the voting process escalate.

Thousands of attorneys and support staffers have agreed to aid in the effort, providing a mass of legal support that appears to be unrivaled by Republicans or precedent. Obama's campaign says it is particularly concerned about the implementation of new voter ID laws across the country, the possibility of anti-fraud activists challenging legitimate voters and the handling of voter registrations in the most competitive states.

Republicans are building their own legal teams for the election. They say they're focused on preventing fraud ? making sure people don't vote unless they're eligible ? rather than turning away qualified voters.

Since the disputed 2000 presidential election, both parties have increasingly concentrated on building legal teams ? including high-priced lawyers who are well-known in political circles ? for the Election Day run-up. The Bush-Gore election demonstrated to both sides the importance of every vote and the fact that the rules for voting and counting might actually determine the outcome. The Florida count in 2000 was decided by just 537 votes and ultimately landed in the Supreme Court.

This year in that state alone, Obama and his Democratic allies are poised to have thousands of lawyers ready for the election and hope to have more than the 5,800 attorneys available four years ago. That figure was nearly twice the 3,200 lawyers the Democrats had at their disposal in 2004.

Romney has been organizing his own legal help for the election. Campaign attorney Ben Ginsberg did not provide numbers but said the campaign has been gratified by the "overwhelming number of attorneys who have volunteered to assist."

"We will have enough lawyers to handle all situations that arise," he said.

The GOP doesn't necessarily need to have a numerical counterweight to Obama's attorneys; the 2000 election showed that experienced, connected lawyers on either side can be effective in court.

Former White House counsel Robert Bauer, who is organizing the Obama campaign's legal deployment, said there is great concern this year because he believes GOP leaders around the county have pursued new laws to impede the right to vote.

"The Republican Party and their allies have mapped out their vote suppression campaign as a response to our success in 2008 with grass-roots organization and successful turnout," Bauer said. "This is their response to defeat: changing the rules of participation so that fewer participate."

Several states with Republican leaders have recently pursued changes that could make voting more difficult, including key states such as Florida and Ohio, despite objections from voting rights groups that believe that the laws could suppress votes from low-income and minority blocs.

Republicans dispute that the laws are political, pointing to cases of election fraud and arguing that measures like those requiring voters to show identification are simply common sense. Pennsylvania's Republican House majority leader, Mike Turzai, however, told GOP supporters over the weekend that the state's new ID law "is going to allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania."

Independent from the Romney team, a conservative group is prepping an Election Day team of its own to combat possible fraud.

Catherine Engelbrecht, president and founder of True the Vote, said the organization hopes to train and mobilize up to one million volunteers this year, many of them to serve poll watchers. One of the group's main initiatives is to "aggressively pursue fraud reports."

"Being a poll watcher is an age-old tradition and we're fortunate that so many volunteers are ready and willing to take a day off, learn what they need to know and help out at the polls," Engelbrecht said. True the Vote already has thousands signed up to help and had 500 trained election workers monitoring the Wisconsin recall vote earlier this month.

"They serve as volunteer guardians of the republic, to ensure that procedures at the polls are in keeping with state law," she said.

It's one of the efforts that have Obama's team fretting. The Democrats fear that anti-fraud activity could get out of hand, with vigilante poll watchers targeting and intimidating voters who may not know their rights.

"We will have the strategy and the resources to address the threat and protect the voter," Bauer said.

The Obama-aligned attorneys, most of whom are not election experts by trade, undergo training and have materials to show them how to help at the polls on Election Day.

Charles Lichtman, who is helping advise the effort in Florida this year after leading it in the last two cycles, first created the Florida Democratic Lawyers Council after the 2000 election, vowing that there would never be a repeat of that disputed vote. He contends Democrat Al Gore would have won the presidency over Republican George W. Bush if a similar legal infrastructure had been in place then.

Lichtman's efforts have since been replicated for other states. He said that is vital to provide voter protection.

"My experience has been that, in every election, the other side has taken drastic measures to try to suppress the vote," Lichtman said. The volunteer organization has not been involved in the 2012 legal disputes so far, though they are monitoring the developments.

Four years ago, the teams of lawyers organized by Obama and Republican candidate John McCain in 2008 went largely unused since the election wasn't very close.

But this year may be different given all the changes to voting laws ? and the closeness of the race in recent polling.

The states with the strictest ID laws require voters to show photo identification before casting ballots. If they don't have proper identification or fail to bring it, they can cast a provisional ballot but must later go to meet with state elections administrators to sort things out before the ballot is counted.

Voting groups see a variety of potential problems, such as how voters are informed of the rule changes, how poll workers handle voters who fail to bring IDs and whether voters are provided adequate notice of the steps they need to take after casting an absentee ballot.

About 30 states have some form of an ID law, with varying methods of implementation.

Legal challenges typically start coming in the weeks before the election, but "litigation has started coming sooner and more vociferously" this year, says Edward Foley, an elections law expert with Ohio State University. That includes lawsuits surrounding Florida's plan to purge ineligible voters from the rolls.

Foley said. "We're in an era of increased litigiousness over the voting process."

He said lawsuits after Election Day may occur only if votes in a battleground state are within the "margin of litigation." That would probably be a difference of just hundreds of votes, a result that would be rare.

Noted biologist Keith Crandall appointed founding director of institute

Keith Crandall, a renowned biologist and population geneticist, has been named founding director of the George Washington University Computational Biology Institute. This newly created position will further strengthen GW's role as a leader in science and research in the region and nationally.

As director, Dr. Crandall will define the scientific vision of the Computational Biology Institute and direct the development and implementation of research plans and organizational structures, with the goal of hiring new faculty as well as integrating existing faculty and resources across the university. He will also serve as professor of biology.

"This is the beginning of a true interdisciplinary initiative at George Washington that I expect will positively impact virtually all colleges and schools," said Leo Chalupa, vice president of research at GW. "I believe that Dr. Crandall's recruitment as the founding director of the Computational Biology Institute will be the driving force towards more cross-campus research in many fields including computer science, evolutionary biology and personalized medicine." Personalized medicine is a medical model in healthcare that allows practitioners to tailor medical decisions to the individual patient using genetic or other information.

The George Washington University is one of the first universities to establish an institute dedicated to computational biology. The institute will focus on large-scale integrative bioinformatics and genomics. Informatics are used to answer important biological questions using massive amounts of data, including genetic and molecular data. Many disciplines are becoming more data-intensive, creating a need for the development of new computational tools and approaches that aid in the integration, interpretation and understanding of complex datasets.

To meet this challenge, the institute will foster creation of new positions in computational biology research, enhancing and synergizing disciplines at George Washington such as the biological, biophysical and biomedical sciences as well as computation disciplines such as computer science, math and statistics. The institute will also build upon existing partnerships with regional research centers of excellence, including Children's National Medical Center, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Janelia Farm, INOVA hospital system, Naval Research Laboratory, Virginia Tech-Arlington and the National Institutes Health intramural research program.

"I feel it a great honor to join the George Washington University faculty and direct the new Computational Biology Institute," said Dr. Crandall. "We have an amazing opportunity in this new genomics era to be world leaders in developing and implementing computational approaches to broad questions from biodiversity crisis issues to translational medicine. With the exceptional faculty and outstanding leadership at GW, the institute is sure to be a huge success."

Dr. Crandall comes to George Washington from Brigham Young University where he has served as a faculty member since 1996 and chair of the biology department since 2007. He is a recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Young Investigator Award, the National Science Foundation Career Award, the National Institutes of Health James A. Shannon Director's Award and a Fulbright Scholar Award to Oxford University. He is past president of the Society of Systematic Biologists.

A recipient of more than $18 million in grant funds, Dr. Crandall brings to George Washington two grant awards. He is the lead investigator and one of 11 researchers from 10 institutions across the country working on a component of the ground-breaking "Open Tree of Life" project funded by the National Science Foundation. Dr. Crandall also is serving as part of a team of researchers studying the affects of the BP oil spill on coastal ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico.

The George Washington University Computational Biology Institute will be located at the university's Virginia Science and Technology Campus (VSTC) in Ashburn, Va. A second "wet" lab will be housed at Children's National Medical Center.

"One could not imagine a better field to fit the research and educational profile of VSTC," said Ali Eskandarian, dean of GW's Virginia Science and Technology Campus. "The spirit of the campus embodies inter- and multi-disciplinary research that while cutting edge on the discovery front also has the potential for applications to the larger technological and scientific challenges of the society.

"The addition of computational biology to VSTC with such fertile grounds for innovation and discovery brings a new source of vitality to the campus and will play a key role in ushering a new era of growth and activity for the university. The potential for discoveries and growth in this field is enormous."

A prolific researcher, Dr. Crandall publishes an average of 10 to 12 papers a year and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed papers. In 2010, he was designated a "Highly Cited" researcher, a distinction reserved for the top one-half of one percent of all publishing scholars. Dr. Crandall is among the 250 most-cited researchers in the category of "Ecology/Environment" rated by the ISI Web of Knowledge database. He has written 21 papers that have been cited more than 100 times each on subjects ranging from the evolution of HIV to the biogeography of Australian crayfish.

Dr. Crandall has a Ph.D. in population and evolutionary biology and an M.A. in statistics, both from Washington University in St. Louis. He has a B.A. in biology and mathematics from Kalamazoo College.

"Those of us at GW who are interested in employing computational analysis to understand complex biological systems are very excited about Dr. Keith Crandall joining our faculty," said L. Courtney Smith, search committee co-chair and professor of biology. "We in the Department of Biology in particular, are looking forward to initiating scientific interactions with Dr. Crandall that augment our research and expand our funding capabilities."
