USC FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Depth chart should be clearer after scrimmage

USC holds its second scrimmage Sunday and it could influence the depth chart.

Trojans coach Lane Kiffin said it will be more physical than the first scrimmage.

"There's a lot of excitement and anticipation by the players for what will be the most tackling (of camp)," he said Friday.

Strong safeties Jawanza Starling and Demetrius Wright will split snaps as Kiffin waits to name an official starter. The scrimmage will also allow wide receiver George Farmer to show if he can mount a serious challenge to De'von Flournoy for the No. 3 wide receiver spot.

"We all have different attributes," Farmer said. "I just feel like I have a lot of ground to make up."

Even left tackle is competitive, as true freshman Max Tuerk mounts a surprising challenge to starter Aundrey Walker, who is returning from a shoulder injury.

Linemates

Right tackle Kevin Graf and right guard John Martinez have developed a camaraderie that allows them to be an effective combination even though they might not get mentioned by the coaches after games.

"John and I work really well together," said Graf, an Agoura High graduate. "Communication is the biggest part. There are times I need to have his back and he needs to have mine."

Dog days

Kiffin said wide receiver Nelson Agholor and some of the other freshmen are "hitting the wall" during the second week of training camp. But Agholor managed to catch a long touchdown pass from quarterback Cody

Kessler on Friday.

Agholor has been limited during training camp because doctors discovered he has asthma.

Dawson update

Why has middle linebacker Lamar Dawson been sidelined since the first day of camp? Sources said Dawson suffered a torn calf muscle but is expected to be back for the season opener against Hawaii.

Spell check

USC announced tailback Javorius Allen's first name was misspelled since he enrolled last year. The school spelled his first name Javorious.

Lost bet

Kicker Andre Heidari made a 45-yard field goal at the end of practice that allowed the team to get an extra hour of sleep this morning until tailback Curtis McNeal asked for a double-or-nothing bet that would also allow the team to skip Friday night meetings.

But Heidari missed a 50-yard field goal, which meant the original 6 a.m. wake-up call was in effect.

"I said to Curtis, `That's why you have no money,"' Kiffin said.

Neuheisel appearance

Former UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel spent three hours at USC on Friday afternoon broadcasting a college football show on Sirius Radio.

Back to Dedeaux

USC will practice again today at the school's baseball stadium (Dedeaux Field) and should return to Howard Jones Field on Monday, when new grass is expected to be ready for practice.
