October 26: Howl at the Moon Night, National Mincemeat Day, Mule Day

Howl at the Moon Night

There have probably been times when we all wanted to howl at the moon but let our inhibitions (or fear of being arrested) get in the way. Well, this is your chance, because tonight is "Howl at the Moon Night." Appropriately timed just five days before Halloween, we can all participate in the romantic allure of vampires and werewolves.

When you're all howled-out, head back inside and settle in for an evening of enchanting fantasy by watching Michael Landon in the classic film, "I Was a Teenage Werewolf." You can check out the details on Yahoo! Movies.

Here is some interesting werewolf trivia you may not have known:

* "Lycanthropy is the supernatural condition whereby a human transforms into a wolf."

* "Werewolf legends have been used to explain the acts of serial killers."

* "Werewolf movies commonly link lycanthropy with the onset of puberty, as both conditions commonly involve hair growth, mood swings, and strong impulses."

National Mincemeat Day

Most people have heard of mincemeat pies, but very few actually know what they are. Historically they were made with chopped liver, minced meat, boiled eggs, dried fruit and spices ? yum! Through the ages the meat was replaced with suet (or fat), and today they generally contain a preserve containing apples, dried fruits, spices, and either suet or vegetable shortening.

Well, today is "National Mincemeat Day," so if you're ever going to take the plunge, now's the time. Since you're not likely to find a good variety of mincemeat baked goods at your local grocery, here are some interesting recipes from Yahoo! Shine:

Pear and Mincemeat Tart

Mincemeat Cornucopias

Mincemeat Pastry Twists

Mule Day

October 26 is "Mule Day," and marks the anniversary of the arrival of a very special Spanish donkey to the United States in 1785. The donkey was a gift to George Washington from King Charles III of Spain.

Washington used the donkey to breed with his prize Virginia mares and started a herd of "super mules." By 1799 there were 57 new mules at Mt. Vernon. Many of the finest mules in America today came from this prestigious lineage.

Here are some interesting facts about mules:

* Horses have 64 chromosomes, donkeys have 62, and mules and hinnies have 63.

* Mules can kick in any direction.

* Mules are serving in military missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
